A Glimpse into History
Moroccan Jews have long been an integral part of the country’s diverse cultural landscape. Before the establishment of Israel in 1948, Morocco boasted the largest Jewish community in the Muslim world, with a population of around 250,000 to 350,000. However, today, only a fraction of that number remains, with fewer than 2,500 Jews still residing in Morocco. The Museum of Moroccan Judaism stands as a testament to this enduring heritage.
A Vision Realized
The museum was established in 1997, thanks to the efforts of Jewish Moroccans Serge Berdugo, Jacques Toledano, Boris Toledano, and the late Simon Levy. These individuals recognized the importance of preserving and celebrating Moroccan Jewish culture. Housed in a building that originally served as a Jewish orphanage, the museum officially opened its doors on 20 December 2016, inaugurated by King Mohammed VI of Morocco.

Additionally, the museum boasts an impressive collection of Jewish Berber history, including costumes, jewelry, and khmisa pendants.
Preserving History with Megilat Hitler
A particularly poignant artifact in the museum’s collection is Megilat Hitler, a historic Moroccan document that sheds light on the persecution of Jews in North Africa during World War II. Written in the style of the biblical Book of Esther by Moroccan Jew and Hebrew teacher Asher Ḥassin, this scroll commemorates the defeat of the Axis powers in Africa. It serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of Moroccan Jews during trying times.

The Museum of Moroccan Judaism continues to grow and evolve, thanks to generous contributions from individuals passionate about preserving Jewish heritage. French-Moroccan opera singer David Serero made an exceptional donation of Moroccan Judaica artifacts, the largest contribution of its kind to a Moroccan museum. This meaningful act highlights the deep-rooted connections between Moroccan and Jewish cultures and fosters a greater understanding of ethnic and religious pluralism.
